Portobello Free Winter Film Festival 3 – 7 December
Continuing to mark 30 Free Years of the Portobello Film Festival- free admission and free film submission in Portobello Road- we invite you to enjoy a special Winter Festival highlighting some of our favourite films and filmmakers and remembering local poet and actor Heathcote Williams.
Opening on 3 December at the Frestonian Gallery 2 Olaf Street W11 4BE on the site of the Frestonia People’s Hall, we present a reading of Heathcote Williams’ last play The Ruff Tuff Estate Cream Puff Estate Agency and Frestonia Rules, OK? The real story of the legendary independent state from its instigator, starring Jenny Runacre and Loftus Burton. This play deserves to be seen and the Festival hopes this reading will bring it to a wider audience.
For three days from 4– 6 December at The Muse 269 Portobello Road W11 1LR we screen free films every evening from 6pm, starting on Thursday 4th with I Was A Teenage Sex Pistol, Glen Matlock remembers. On Friday 5th continuing the Punk rock theme we share Danny Garcia’s The Rise And Fall Of The Clash Redux introduced by Chris Salewicz, and on Saturday 6th, by popular demand after opening Summer’s festival, we show the Ralph Steadman manifesto For No Good Reason with Johnny Depp, to be introduced by the director Charlie Paul.
And to finish on 7th December we move to Muse Gallery’s outreach at the XYZ Brentford artists’ colony Brentford High Street TW8 0DS with a reshowing of For No Good Reason and more Portobello Greatest Hits.
All evenings feature the best short movies from the past five years of the Portobello Film Festival including Stacy Stone’s Nona and Hannah Gal’s Erin Beyond The Bruises about woman’s refuge founder Erin Pizzey with Joanna Lumley.

at 6.15 Alan Yentob introduces his legendary David Bowie doc "Cracked Actor" followed by a Q&A also featuring Mark Wardell whose book "Fly In The Milk" about the movie has just been published.
David Bowie sat in the back of the black Cadillac as it was driven through the empty streets of LA at 4am. The sound of a lone police siren in the distance made him visibly stiffen. Glancing furtively towards the camera he sniffed several times and asked: 'Is there anyone behind us? I hope we're not stopped.'
The scene, filmed at the height of his fame – and a cocaine addiction that Bowieadmitted nearly killed him – is one of many extraordinary and revealing moments in Cracked Actor, a groundbreaking 1974 film originally made for the acclaimed BBCarts programme Omnibus.
The 53-minute film, which music 'bible' Rolling Stone magazine now calls the 'greatest rockumentary ever', captured Bowie as he toured America for his Diamond Dogs tour.
from 8pm Portobello Video Café features Marcus Sinclair’s Interview With Coppola Soundman Walter Mirsch, Henry Scott’s Soho Cinema Tales, music videos, Portobello Festival Award winners, Sci Fi and local documentaries.
The first of regular Portobello Video Café evenings at The Muse, free entry all night, complimentary refreshments while stocks last, and more seasonal surprises.
Entry Free All Night but get here early for Mr Yentob and David Bowie.
